The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update

If you follow us, about a year ago I started thinking about the fireplace (and how NOT enamored with it I was). I dug up some fireplace inspiration in the hopes that I would find something awesome and reasonably cost friendly.  The thing is, we have some really pretty millwork around the fireplace, but over the fireplace is an awful TV space, meant for one of those gigantic tube TVs. Aside from the part where it a terrible waste of space, it is a complete eyesore, as well.

The more I looked, however, the more I realized that I have REALLY expensive taste. The fireplaces I love would require a complete gut, a big mess, and a LOT of money (like upwards of $3000 just for the fireplace surround). So, the alternative is to keep what I have and build upon it. I came up with a design that I think I’m really going to love, that’s very US, and added to it a bit. Rainman is going to kill me when he sees what I added to the project (but ultimately he’ll love how it looks).

This is what we’re starting with (the before):

The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update
The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update, Before We Started

Okay, so it’s not really that bad. I should stop my crying and just stay with what I have, right? (insert evil laughter).  We both know that’s not going to happen. And, is there a reason that I’m showing the whole wall and not just the fireplace? Oh yes, there is. But, we’ll get to that.

Right now, it is a very classic-ish, plain fireplace with some pretty mill-work and a crazy, giant opening up top. This is a shot of it with the cabinet doors that I ordered from Cabinet Door World. So, yeah, you can make cabinet doors (pretty easily), however, with no working wood shop currently, and very little time, I ended up ordering them instead. The quality is very good and the ordering process was easy. I got them exactly the size of the opening, so I’m sure we’ll need to do some sanding once we dry fit the hardware.

The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update
The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update; Doors To Be Mounted Above

For the color we chose Benjamin Moore’s “wrought iron” and I think it will be fantastic. I’m planning on using it for the cabinets we’re moving out of the kitchen into the mudroom area, also, so this will be a good test run. Check out the tutorial on how we used a great, super cheap spray gun to paint the cabinet doors!

The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update
The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update; Our Favorite Paint! Benjamin Moore, Wrought Iron

Project tip: We were painting over a semi-gloss, so we sanded with a sanding block first, then wiped down the whole thing and let it dry before painting (a good three coats because of the color!).

The cabinet hardware, from House Of Antique Hardware is still backordered, so I will update once that comes in and we get the doors up, but for now, I couldn’t WAIT to show you how amazing the fireplace looks with a fresh coat of paint! Drum roll, please.

The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update
The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update; Painted and Updated

It blows my mind sometimes how much a simple color change can transform a space! (And yes, I’m planning on painting the walls… but there are more dining room projects that have to happen first, like the new doors and the stone veneer on the wall to the left of the fireplace… Welcome to my project A.D.D.)

And one more, just because I’m so in love:

The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update

Project Update:

You’ll remember that we weren’t actually done, I just had to show you the paint because I was way too excited. The most difficult part of the project was still to come: actually installing the doors over the fireplace.

A quick word of advice: If you have to work with your spouse, find something that works for you. I find a combination of wine and a mute button work best when he’s doing something for me. I throw in some compliments and thank yous about the awesomeness of his work and shut my mouth. If I have the urge to OPEN my mouth and say something, I open it and insert wine. It has worked out pretty well thus far and has yielded tremendous results.

I ordered the doors so they exactly fit in the opening. That means that in order to account for the fact that the opening is not square and unlevel areas on the mantel, the doors had to be dry-fit, then trimmed down. Now, let me tell you, this is the most Rainman-iest project in Rainman land. It also means that we couldn’t paint them until they were fitted and trimmed.

Full disclosure: I love this man.

First, was the problem of explaining why we needed to build trim above to act as a stop for the doors and fill in the dead space above when the doors are closed. It’s not that he doesn’t understand my “I don’t want a gap above the doors”, it’s just that explaining something conceptually doesn’t always translate to something concrete in his brain. So, a little while later, he devised a solution.

The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update
The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update, Installing Trim Over Fireplace

“YES, my love, that will fill in the gap. It’s perfect. What’s the next step?” (sips wine)

The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update
The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update, Trim Above Doors

 Back to Rainman Land:

This installation involves a plumb-bob, multiple levels, obsessive measuring, remeasuring, shimming, shimming again, dry fitting, shimming again.  Measuring again.  Splitting the difference. Rainman muttering about the lack of squareness in the opening. Let’s just say that I may or may not have started drinking before 5 PM that day (but once again, in my hurry to slap it up there and be done with it, I’m quite sure it wouldn’t have been so downright balanced and lovely in the end).

The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update
The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update, Shimming Doors

After it was shimmed (I don’t mean to undersell the length of that process), I held the doors while he aligned the hinges (more wine, more wine, more wine), and eventually, after much careful sanding and trimming, the doors were hung, and had all the clearance they needed to open and close.

The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update
The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update, Doors Dry Fitted

Now, we are waiting on it to be not blustery weather so we can take the doors down and paint them.  And then we will actually be done.

Update: Finally painted!

I’m really fond of drum rolls, so let’s do that again.  Here’s a shot with the doors on and DONE!

The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update

And one with the doors painted, on, and CLOSED. WOOT! (Can’t see the TV, can ya, Russ?)

The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update
The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update; Doors Painted, On, and CLOSED

It may seem like a small thing to other people, but this project has been on the list for a long time. It’s just a matter of making it a priority and having the time to do it. But, of course, that makes each little change that much more awesome!

Here is the breakdown:

Project Cost:

  • Benjamin Moore Paint and supplies: $96.66
  • Two Cabinet doors: $149.57 (delivered)
  • House of Antique Hardware 2X Pair of 9″ Smooth Iron Flush Mount Spear Strap Hinges: $43.94

Total: $290.17

And just for fun, let’s see that before and after one more time:

The Dark and Moody Fireplace Update: The After: Doors above the fireplace, fresh paint, and a new light fixture

It sure is amazing what some doors, paint, and a light fixture can do to a room, right??? And, here’s a shot with what it looks like with the dining table and chairs (which will soon be replaced, but that’s a story for another day!).

Classic, Elegant Christmas Decor Inspiration and Ideas on a Budget

I’ve been sneaking Christmas decor out of the closet, but I guess I’m not super stealthy. The thing is, I don’t have a lot a lot of energy, and I really have to pace myself. So, if everything but the tree is up before Thanksgiving, so be it. This is my favorite time of the year, and the little white twinkling lights just give me the Christmas feels! So, here is what I have done so far:

*This post may contain affiliate links. Please see full disclosure at the end of the post.

The exterior: If it was up to me, we’d be done. I have wreaths with red ribbons and window candles with automatic light sensors and flickering flames (for about $5 each, I thought these were a steal). Okay, maybe some lighted garland around the porch would be cool, but, we’ll see. Clark Griswold is already harassing me about adding more lights, but I’m standing my ground.

Classic Christmas Decor
Classic Christmas Decor: Wreaths with red ribbons in the windows and window candles

This is a great example of the unpredictable weather in Coastal NC: My roses are still blooming, my hydrangea leaves haven’t wilted yet, my Christmas stuff is out, and there are still tons of leaves falling.

Classic Christmas Decor
Classic Christmas Decor: Individual window wreaths with red velvet ribbon, pink roses, and a stacked stone garden.

This is a close up of the basic wreaths: Very basic but should hold up well outdoors, and they were cheap enough that it won’t break my heart if they’re ruined. They’re perfectly matched with the window candles!

Classic Christmas Decor
Classic Christmas Decor: Window Wreaths and Flickering Window Candles

This is a great example of “be where you are.” I am not in love with my fireplace set up currently, but it’s where we are, so I just decorated the crap out of it. I am REALLY proud of my garland I put together, with a willow/eucalyptus garland combined with a basic fir garland (if you don’t have any of these, go to Michael’s after Christmas when they’re pretty much giving them away. They’re on racks on the wall and I got the basic lighted garlands for about $5 each. The faux silver dollar eucalyptus and preserved roses arrangement I added as an afterthought and I love the combo. (Check out our great post on how to preserve roses!)

Classic Christmas Decor
Classic Christmas Decor: Eucalyptus/Willow Lighted Garland, Christmas Eucalyptus and Preserved Roses Arrangement, Classic Candlesticks and Candlebra, and Classic Oversized Ethan Allen Vase with Faux Cranberries

This awesome Ethan Allen Vase I use for every season with different stems because I ADORE it! The faux cranberries make a gorgeous, simple seasonal arrangement (tip: open them outside and let them air out a little… they have a heavy chemical scent but are beautiful once they’ve breathed a little they’re great!).

For the story of why our turtle inspires us, check out the story on Our Instagram!

And finally, I’m still in work on these faux eucalyptus mixed garlands, and there is a great garland tutorial on our blog so you can make your own much more cheaply than buying them! And I’m just loving the cool led cork-bottle fairy lights, if you’re looking for what to do with all those bottles you saved.

Mashup Monday 9: 10 Inspired Southern Vermont Fireplaces That Will Have You Planning Your Renovation

Even though we are currently living in balmy, soup-pot-climate North Carolina, my extended family hails from Southern Vermont. Sometimes, missing home, I get on Zillow and start searching properties up North. Although I’m quickly dissuaded when I visit during sub-zero winters, there’s no denying the charm of New England, and specifically, Vermont homes. One of the features I noticed during a late night search a few weeks ago was the complete awesomeness of the dreamy, warm fireplaces in Southern Vermont.

Fireplaces in Vermont have some intangible things that set them apart, from the primitive originals to the new build copycats, I think you’ll love them, too. Check out the gallery!

House Porn: An Artist’s Masterpiece in Alabama

I have a confession to make: I’m bored to tears with white.  There was a time when texture and color were okay, and i desperately miss those days. I recently found a place where every surface: every wall, floor, fixture, and cabinet door has interest.  Like a breath of fresh air: hand carved details, custom wall finishes, hand hewn floors… I love it all. Check out the home tour in photos below.

The listing, at 2740 Abingdon Rd, Mountain Brook, AL is 4 bedrooms, 5.5 baths, and a sprawling 4337 sq. ft.  The listing photos are the property of the Realtor, Brooke Wahl, at ARC realty and can be reached at 855-822-3469 for anyone interested in purchasing.

House Porn: Magical Restored Victorian Train Car On Yellowstone River in Montana

What if there was a place, a magical place, where you could go to be alone?  A Victorian era train car, beautifully restored and sitting on 13 acres on the Yellowstone River, just outside of Yellowstone National Park is on the market for just under $800k.  It is currently used as a vacation rental, so either way, wouldn’t it be cool to stay there?

Check it out, it’s awesome:

It’s just so NEAT.  And private, I might add.  What a great weekend getaway.

I love that the exterior has been maintained to still look like a working train car.

I would absolutely have to have pictures hanging off the back like I’m about to jump from a moving train.

Every space inside is thoughtfully and luxuriously appointed.  Supple leather and Victorian era (I love the cowhide!) pressed tin ceilings, period real wood wainscoting, and rich velvet curtains.  The black and white train photos are a perfect addition.

House Porn: Amish Country Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

For a cool $2,350,000 you can own this 15,370 foot castle-ish home in Lancaster PA.  I love looking at homes in this area primarily because of the awesome stonework, handcrafted woodwork, and copious numbers of amazing antique fireplaces.  If it is that big and made of stone, I think I get to call it a castle.  HA.  Did I mention stone walls?  I have a stone wall fetish, and it just so happens that Pennsylvania was where I built my first stacked stone garden wall with rocks that I dug out of my yard and the surrounding woods.

In Lancaster, usually known for Amish influence, stonework, and mission style furniture, this place sits like a magical, hidden oasis in the center of town.  With 8 bedrooms and 9 baths, and sitting on 3.5 secluded acres in the center of town, it was originally built in 1920 and appears to have gone through a variety of renovation cycles.  I went through a range of emotions looking at the pictures, but some of the parts of this delightful place are definitely worth sharing.

*This post may contain affiliate links. Please see full disclosure at the end of the post.

To be certain this place is one of the most confused mix of styles I’ve seen to date.  I think pieces of this home were renovated in every decade last century and left as is.  I’m going to start with the exterior because I find it absolutely breathtaking.  It feels like something a Lord would be living in somewhere in the mountains in central Europe.

All photo credits go to the listing agent Anne Lusk with Lusk & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty, and if you’re interested in purchasing she can be reached at 717-271-9339.

I’m going to call this next part:

  1. The part of this house that takes my breath away: the entire outside of the house.  Curb appeal, outdoor living, everything (the only thing that’s missing is a pool and an outdoor kitchen).

This is real, actual stone: not stone veneer.  Check out the awesome exterior:

Blue Stone Castle, Home Exterior

Sigh.  The drone view is amazing.  The levels, the roofline, the stone.  All breathtaking.

The approach to the house is incredible.  Driving up, you must know something magical is about to happen.

The house is completely surrounded by stone paths and manicured gardens.  Afternoon stroll, anyone?

Bluestone exterior

No castle is perfect without a great lawn.  Perfect for big families.

Stone paths at Lancaster stone castle

And if you like your paths shady and wooded, there’s some of that, too.

Raised patio area with terracotta tile at bluestone castle
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

I’m betting the terracotta tiles were added late in the game (but, they’re lucky, they’re back in).  Just ignore the outdoor furniture that may have been procured circa 1985.

And MORE exterior patio space.  This place is just WRAPPED in a stone patio.  It’s really nicely done.

More filtered light walking paths.  Seriously?  Their garden designer gets an A+.  It would be hard to stay inside (except in the winter, when it’s ridiculously cold in PA).

I like to call this picture: when their three story garage is bigger than my house.  LOVE.

And, finally, no castle is complete without a magnificent, solid, carved front door with cast-iron hardware.

The next section is:

2) Awesome amenities.

Okay, they’re not PERFECT, but they’re there.  And kind of awesome.

Pool table recreation room
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

Having a pool table is SO awesome.  I don’t think I’d like the rec room open to the rest of the house, but it’s great that it’s there.  (This is your first hint of the traditional brown that they bathed most of the living area in… which sort of makes sense with the whole castle thing).

Another shot of the pool table room.  (Check out that great bench!)

This is SO cool.  (Please ignore the drop ceiling- there will be more on that later)

Wine cellar in the Lancaster Castle
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

I generally love ANY wine cellar, and this is no exception.  Unfortunately, I hate that red color on the walls (even if it kind of fits the whole castle theme) and how would one actually go about PAINTING BEHIND the wine racks???  It’s bad enough that you have to take down pictures and remove light switch covers to paint, but disassembling an entire wine room would be a bummer.

Wooden staircase at lancaster castle
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

I love the wooden back staircase.  Classic and nicely done.  The floors are magnificent.

This next section, though not perfect, falls into the category of:

3) Things that make me feel tingly all over, and I maybe never thought of before.

Dude, this is the two level master suite.  Yes, I said TWO LEVEL master suite.  Now, I’m trying to figure out how to make this happen at my house.

Bed on a platform in master suite
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

Okay, so bear with me here.  Ignore the furniture and drapes, but check out the PLATFORM, and for some reason I really like the carpet???  Also, the cherry stained coffered ceiling is absolutely stunning.  I adore it.  I feel like films have been made in this room.

Cherry coffered ceiling, paneling, and fireplace surround in master suite
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

Prepare for the tingling!  The cherry paneling continues down the FIREPLACE alcove (swoon) and down the railings and paneling that leads downstairs to the lower half of the master suite.  Oh yeah, you heard me right.

Downstairs sitting room for master bedroom wrapped in cherry paneling
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

So, downstairs from the bedroom is your own personal “sitting room,” which is more like a whole living room, wrapped in that same beautiful cherry paneling with yet another wood burning fireplace and bookshelves.

Sitting room in cherry paneling downstairs from master bedroom
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

Yes, I get that the fireplace and the gigantic, hot tub sized bath are in that awful green marble, but I could get over that.  The beginnings of the matching cherry wardrobes can be seen from the sitting room.  I just can’t imagine a more awesome set up for the master bedroom.

Glass block in master shower with cherry trim
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

The green marble and gold fixtures are quite ridiculous (is that late 80s glam?) but, once again, I could get over it.  This floor plan is to die for.

And now we’ve come to the rest of the house and what I’d like to call a very confusing mashup of styles.

4) What in the world is going on here?

If everything before this was “the good”, then what follows now is the bad, ugly, and perhaps downright bizarre.  Allow me to explain.

Previously we saw beautiful exterior stonework reminiscent of early primitive Americana or even an old English manor or castle.  So, the heavy traditional cherry molding and even the green marble and shiny gold fixtures were excusable.  That is where any cohesiveness in this space ends.

The kitchen is very traditional and sort of fits with the castle-ish feel and the browns throughout.  The elevated fireplace IS awesome and I love the placement.  That’s about where my love affair ends.  Enter the mission style furniture in the kitchen (remember the fantastic chesterfield sofa in the master suite?).

Kitchen in the Lancaster castle

Mission style stools at the island.

Traditional kitchen in the Lancaster Castle
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

The mission style benches, chairs, and dining hutch are starting to clash with the traditional kitchen here (I SO love the floors, they’re gorgeous).

Mission style furniture in traditional kitchen
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

From this view, everything SORT OF matches, the traditional cabinetry mixed with the heavy mission style dining room set (although I do love the scale of the table).

img_2665
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania
Kitchen island lined up with fireplace
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

I’m wagging my finger at the realtor here.  The countertops should’ve been cleared and every fireplace should have a fire going.

Now here’s where it gets weird.  We’ve gone from a decent traditionalish space with mission style furniture, which leads us to the formal spaces which are….

Oriental furnishings in Lancaster castle
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

Oriental style.  I actually started laughing looking at this listing the further I got into it.  Because it’s downright confusing.

House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

This chandelier is breathtaking, in the Oriental styled dining room, with traditional gilded mirror.

img_2661
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

Which brings us to the basement.  With 80s modern natural cabinets, mirrored pillars, traditional stone fireplace, green carpeting, track lighting and a drop ceiling,…   The only thing salvageable here is the stone fireplace.

img_2669
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

Yet another stunning chandelier, iron railings, and terracotta tiles that match NOT at all the continuation of the oriental styling in the elevated living room.

img_2670
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

The orangy-reddish theme continues in more spaces (though you know I love builtins).

img_2671
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

And for the media room, we’ve gone back to deep red and mission style furniture.

img_2672
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

I actually sort of dig this workspace.  It looks very functional.

Which brings us to our next section: Themed bedrooms.  Normally people who put their houses on the market will paint the bedrooms if they’ve indulged their kids in personal styling.  My guess is this room hasn’t been painted since the early nineties when this “child” graduated from high school (tip off: the Garfield collection which I also had).

The kids antechamber, complete with 80s couches- sort of feels like a TV studio green room, right?

img_2698
House Porn: A Castle in Lancaster Pennsylvania

If that whole thing didn’t give you whiplash, that was my best game.

All kidding aside, this place grabbed me because of the stunning exterior beauty.  I would gladly spend a lifetime updating it room by room, restoring it to a serene and cohesive space.  It appears to have solid bones and the cosmetic updates shouldn’t be terribly difficult.  In fact, I’m fairly certain that most of the updates would involve paint, flooring, and furniture removal.

If you’re looking for a place in the middle of town, in the middle of Amish country, this could be your own personal paradise.

Thanks for stopping by and check out more on our blog.  Cheers!

House Porn: Epic Charleston Historic Property on Legare Street

I have a confession to make: I’m addicted to beautiful homes.  I especially love old homes, updated with modern conveniences, but disguised with original charm.  What we’re missing in the United States is the REALLY old world charm you can find in Europe and beyond, but we do have our own type of royalty.  We have areas with wonderful historic districts, and when people list their homes, we get a glimpse of the type of artisanship possible even here, and distinctive in it’s Americana.

One of my favorite places to stalk Real Estate is in Charleston, SC.  If we ever had royalty, it would’ve been here.  Enter this stunning estate on Legare Street, which, for a cool $15 million dollars (ish), you can live like a baron.  Check out the following photos (photo credits to the listing agent).

If you’re ready to drop some serious cha-ching for a historic favorite in Charleston, this estate is listed by Debbie Fisher at Handsome Properties, Inc in Charleston, SC.  They’ve dropped the price from an initial listing in 2016 at $19,500,000 so I’d guess this is probably bargain pricing for this type of place.

DIY Custom White Board and Batten Wainscoting and Crown Molding

The beautiful thing about this particular renovation, is that our house flooded. Yes, I said the GOOD thing. Bear with me. Hang on. I’ll explain.

This post may contain affiliate links.  Please see the full disclosure at the bottom of the post.

Before

I’m so embarrassed. This is the living room before the flood:

img_1107
The poor living room in need of help (and at the bottom of the honey-do-list) before the flood.

We had lived in our old house for several years and, aside from the fact that we were packed in there like sardines, we didn’t have the time or energy to get to some of the upgrades on our ever-growing-wish-list. We have a STUFF problem. As in, we have too much of it. Without builtins, there was stuff everywhere, with no rhyme or reason, just looking cluttered and awful. For me, this creates stress, and no matter how clean the house was, I never felt settled.

So, then the clouds parted, and the rain came. Well, not actual rain. The hot water supply line under the master bedroom sink broke in the middle of the night (directly above the living room) and completely destroyed the living room and most of the contents.

The Flood

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to a hot, steamy room. “Is the shower on?” Nope. No shower. But, I stepped down into ankle deep water to investigate, UPSTAIRS. Not good.

Wet living room ceiling from bathroom flood upstairs.

Wet living room ceiling from bathroom flood upstairs.

This offered up an opportunity for a few things, since we have fantastic homeowners insurance. I’d like to take a moment to give a shout out to my homies at USAA who made the insurance claims process painless. The contractors were so relieved when we said we had USAA. That was enough to solidify my belief in their awesomeness.

Demolition

The first thing that happened was the ripping out of the all of the sheetrock and flooring in the living room. Which made it look really weird. But, also awesome. Why? Two words: Popcorn ceilings. Even one room without those would be amazing and it was on my list of stuff to make happen.

Ceiling Sheetrock removed from living room ceiling.

A week and a half of industrial blowers and dehumidifiers later, the living room was dry and ready for REconstruction.

Wet Sheetrock removed.

Reconstruction

So, honestly, the hardest part of a renovation is getting started. My favorite way to kickstart the process is to walk into a room with a crowbar or a sledgehammer and start swinging. Then Rainman sighs, and says, “so, that’s the next project, then?” But, in this case, we HAD to do the renovation, because it flooded. YAY!

So, demolition complete, the living room was ready to start rebuilding. Keep in mind, I knew this was not our forever home, so I took some design chances I probably wouldn’t duplicate now.

Sheetrock

The crew came in and put in sheetrock (we paid an additional $250 to have the ceiling flat finished instead of popcorn which felt a lot like extortion, but it was worth it).

Roughed in Sheetrock, ready to be finished.

Tips: When we were “interviewing” contractors we asked if we could make changes to the insurance-approved punchlist after the fact to make sure they were on board. Many contractors will work with you, using the existing insurance payout, plus your add ons, to do upgrades. They will also give you credit for things you do yourself to help pay for some of the upgrades. Why not do upgrades when you have free labor? For instance, in order to put up the sheetrock the fan had to come down first. After the sheetrock was installed, the fan had to go back up. There was a $150 charge approved by the insurance company for an electrician to take it down, and another $150 to put it back up. Rainman installed the damn fan in the first place. We arranged to do that (and several other things) and applied the credit to the upgrades we were having done elsewhere.

This inspiration post is JUST for the wainscoting and molding, although we did install builtins, completely redo the fireplace and surround, and install beautiful flooring. I’ll cover the others separately.

Customizing

I painted my accent color first after Rainman drew me straight lines based upon where I pointed. That way I was sure I liked the height. I also wanted to make sure my awesome industrial airplane canvas fit where I wanted it mounted (I am notorious for prematurely hanging things on walls still under construction and dressing un-finished builtins).

Designing the Board and Batten Layout

The artwork fit perfectly, so I was able to give him the go-ahead to draw out the grid for the boards. Now, here’s the customization part: depending on the scale of your space (we were dealing with standard eight foot ceiling height) you may want a tighter grid, or something more spaced out. You may want wider or thinner boards. We drew out our boards and I liked the look. We used 1″x6″ pine boards for a majority of the grid.

We tried really hard to avoid going over light switches or outlets, but we did hit a few. Because the outlet was in an area that would be covered, we just did a cut out for it. Ditto for the dual light switch.

The grids were installed using finish nails, via a finish nailer and compressor. My husband got these Bostich nailers and compressor as a gift from his father like 15 years ago and they all still work great. We ran the vertical boards against the door frames and in the corners first, then the top and bottom horizontal boards (we used a wider baseboard), then the verticals (between the top and bottom), then the boards in between the verticals.

We did quarter round to cap the wainscoting and a white quarterround to finish it out against the flooring, also.

I apologize for the grainy photos (these are pre-blogging days and were on my phone). You can see the grid before we started the finish work. Above, the first layer of crown molding has gone up.

Finishing Touches, Crown Molding, and Engineered Brazilian Hardwood Flooring

The additional white quarter round against the flooring really set off the deep color in the gorgeous engineered Brazilian Cherry Hardwood. I absolutely love the contrast of white against wood.

This shot shows the second detail layer below the crown and how the wainscoting looked. This is not a crown molding installation how-to. There’s a fantastic tutorial available from the Familyhandyman.com if you’re new at this. Rainman’s tool of choice on this (that we’ve used over and over) is The Dewalt Compound Sliding Miter Saw. We’ve used it to do an entire house of molding (at the old house) and it still does EVERYTHING we need at the new house.

So, this is an awful, grainy photo again. But, it shows how we continued the trim against the builtins. The top of the builtins was open. We capped the builtins with crown (so it continued around the room) and the detail piece tied it in beautifully.

Two pieces of molding really add depth to the ceiling.

Here’s the final crown stack up, with only two pieces.

The finish work was time intensive once all of the crown and wainscoting was up. All of the molding took two layers of caulk (around every edge of the grid and to fill nail holes) to really be finished and THREE layers of gloss white paint. But, it turned out beautifully.

The Finished Product

Beautiful new ceiling, builtins, fireplace, tile surround, new brazilian cherry engineered wood, wainscoting, and crown molding.

This was one of the listing photos of the living room. The white wainscoting and molding REALLY punch up the color contrast and finish the room beautifully. See the finished Old House Tour for more great makeovers.
